About us

The society for textile archaeology and culture studies is a closed society for scholars and researchers. The society is a registred organisation based in Sweden.

The society is a base for both traditional research, experimental and crafts research as well as a knowledge hub for Viking age textile culture. Focus lies on the  Scandinavians of middle Sweden and their culture. We work with three key theories:

  • Culture is not static
  • No one is indifferent to new impressions
  • Culture exchange always travel in both directions.

The purpose of the society is to conduct research within the fields of textile archaeology and textile history, aswell as connected areas and contexts. Focus lies in inter cultural meetings where textiles are treated both as material culture and tradition-bearing units. Sharing the research results to a wide audience is regarded as particularly important. Different kinds of scientific theories and methods are possible tools but practical research where crafts knowledge are used as both a method and a theoretical framwork for analysing and interpreting the source material have a special focus.

The individual members of the society are avaliable for expert advice within the fields of archaeology and textile research. Please send your enquieries to info@textilarkeologi.se, thank you.
